Socio-Economic Review District Faridabad 1999-2000

District Faridabad came on the map of Haryana on 15th August, 1979 as the 12th District of the state. The new District was carved out from erstwhile Gurgoan District. The district having an area of 2151.00 K.m. District having a share of 4.86% of the total state land accommodates a population of 21,93,276 (2001 Population census figures) 10.40 percent of the state population. Its density according to 2001 population census is 1020 persons per Sq. km. against 372 in the state. It is the most densely populated district in the state. According to village papers the area of the district came down from 2155.54 Sq.Km. in the year 1979-80 to 2105.00 Sq.km. as 13 villages of the district were transferred to Gurgoan district. The district has 6 Community Development Blocks located in 5 tehsils. It has 474 villages of which 25 are uninhabited and 40 villages have been urbanised. The district has semi arid climate. The average annual rainfall is 350.4 millimeters. The soils varies from sandy to sandy loam. The under ground strata bearing water varies from 60 to 110 feet from ground. About 44.36 percent population live in villages. Nearly 16.06 percent of population belong to Scheduled Castes(1991 census figures). Literacy percentage in the district is 70.79 percent while the literacy percentage of the state is 68.59

During the year 2000-01, 1.63 lakhs hectares forming about 76.00 percent of the total area was available for cultivation, of this 98.1 percent area was sown. The area sown more than once formed about 66 percent of the net area sown. The total cropped area of the district was 2.65 lakhs hectares. Out of which 75 percent was shown under Food grains (Cereals), 2.5%  was under Pulses and 22.5% was commercial crops. Among food grains, wheat area at 51%  was at top, Paddy with 10.9% of the came next. Barley was sown in 1% of the total cropped area.

The major source of irrigation is tubewells. 78.6 percent of the total areas irrigated was through tubewells. The production of food grain have been increased from631.4 to 654.6 (000 Tonnes). It shows marginal increased from 1999-2000 to 2000-01. Production of oil seeds have been decreased from 7.1 to 6.0 (000 Tonnes). The production of other crops shows marginal increased.

The number of Tube wells/ pumping sets were 28436 in 2000-01. Bulk of the irrigation potential was consumed by wheat. (59 percent).

All the villages have been electrified. All the villages have been connected with pucca road. There are 2471 registered factories and all are functioning. The industrial working force in the district is highest i.e. 36.0 percent in the state. In the Industrial sector Faridabad is in a good position. There may be no doubt if we say Faridabad is the manchaster of India. The major industrial production in the district is of Tractors, steel re-rolling, scientific instruments, power looms,  agriculture implements, JCB crane etc. 

Important industrial production reported during the year 2000-01 was 12880 tractors, 24230 metric tonnes of sugar , 4240 numbers of motorcycle, moped, scooters and agriculture implements of Rs. 5666 lakhs.
During the year 2000-01 as many as 910 Co-operative societies of all types having a membership of 267389 persons, were functioning. About 48 percent of the Societies were non-credit societies. The amount of loans advanced by Co-operative Societies along with PLD Bank during the year 1999-2000 was Rs.30563.27 lacs. Loans out- standing at the end of Co-operative year 1999-2000 were of the over dues of Rs.24106.86 lacs.
Medical service continued to be provided by a multiplicity of agencies like State Government, Local Bodies and voluntary organisation. In all 6 Civil Hospital, 23 Ayurvedic and 3 Unani, 2 Homeo pathic, 39 dispensaries, 22 Primary Health Centres, 117 Sub centres and 13 family welfare centres provided medical care facility in the district. Out of 812 beds available, 430 beds were available for male patients and 382 for female patients. 1270145 patients were treated during 2000-01.
High and Senior Secondary schools continued to provide educational facilities and had a combined enrollment of about 3.94 lakhs students. In addition, there are  20 degree colleges (including two Sanskrit Vidya Piths are located at Baghola and Gadpuri villages) available in the district.
